A third-year medical student from Brooklyn, NY, Topaz Sampson has a history of student leadership and academic excellence. In her undergraduate years at Spelman College, she served as senior class president and delivered the Senior Farewell at commencement. In this position, she served as a member of the Honorary Degree committee with an instrumental role in securing First Lady Michelle Obama for the 2011 commencement. As a medical student, she has continued to develop her leadership skills by serving as the MSI class president. In this role, she served as a provost-appointed member of the dean’s search committee as well as a student member of the academic advisor search committee.

Ms. Sampson is a regular volunteer at Reach Out Dayton, a free clinic serving the underserved in the Dayton metropolitan area. While there she is able to be constantly reminded of the true reason she came to medical school — to serve the underserved. In the summer of 2012, Ms. Sampson took her service abroad and was able to serve her “home” community volunteering at a HIV care and treatment program in Guyana. Most recently, Ms. Sampson has served as the 2013-2014 president-elect of the Student National Medical Association as well as a 2013-2015 student trustee of the National Medical Association.
