Dear NMA Family,
By now, most of you are aware of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that devastated the country of Haiti over the weekend. Nearly 7,000 individuals have been reported injured, and over 1,400 dead, with those numbers expected to unfortunately rise. The country experienced a similarly devastating earthquake in 2020 that killed over 200,000. Though this situation would be more than enough, the Caribbean nation is also bracing for a tropical depression that is expected to significantly impact the area in the south most affected by this recent earthquake.
The rich history of the Haitian people has always been one of resilience. While Haiti remains a symbol of Black independence for the diaspora, Haiti is in desperate NEED of our support now more than ever. Challenges remain to the stability of the nation after the recent assassination of the President. Hospitals were already struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic, and are now in need of additional supplies. Thousands of Haitians are displaced by the quake, and are in need of food and shelter. And with the storm looming, the situation is truly dire.
The National Medical Association stands in solidarity with our Haitian brothers and sisters at this difficult time. Please join me in uplifting the people of Haiti in strength and prayer. I trust in the generosity of the members of the NMA. Below are some reputable organizations where you may choose to donate, if your circumstance allows. If you know of opportunities to assist in relief efforts, please forward them to the Assistant to the President at LWhite@nmanet.org, and we will post this information to the website. Please keep the people of Haiti- their families, friends and those providing assistance to them- in your continued thoughts and prayers.
