NMA Statement on New National COVID-19 Preparedness

Today, the Biden Administration released the National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan which provides a roadmap for the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Rachel Villanueva, President of the National Medical Association, said:

“As the United States prepares for the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Medical Association applauds the Biden Administration for continuing to center the health and wellbeing of all Americans. Since its beginning, the pandemic has disproportionately affected communities of color and particularly African Americans. As we move forward, the National Medical Association recognizes this fact and is rightfully prioritizing vaccinations, boosters, and mitigating strategies to protect communities of color.

“In particular, we commend the plan for addressing misinformation, the “Test to Treat Initiative,” improvements to COVID-19 data collection, reporting, and analysis, and that the Administration will work with Congress to provide dedicated resources for local community-based organizations, health centers, and rural health clinics. These are meaningful efforts that could begin to repair the longstanding health disparities and inequities that have been laid bare by the pandemic.

“We know all too well that the COVID-19 pandemic has had multiple iterations, but we’re grateful to be heading into this next phase with clearer eyes about how to best protect ourselves against this disease, more adequately prepared for new variants, and better positioned to reduce major disruptions to our lives and economy. We welcome the Administration’s shared commitment to help vaccinate the globe and improve access for the African diaspora. At the heart of President Biden’s nationwide public health response is equity – and this plan is our best chance to ensure that every single one of us will move forward safely, together.”
