NMA Statement on Measles Outbreak

Children’s Lives in Danger in West Texas

For Immediate Release:

[Feb. 27, 2025]

An unvaccinated child died yesterday as the measles outbreak continues to spread rapidly in west Texas, growing to nine counties. This death is the first reported measles-related mortality in ten years. The disease is now spreading in eastern New Mexico, in close proximity to West Texas. Although the measles vaccine is required for public schools, it is not required for private and religious schools or homeschooled children, which are prevalent in many of the West Texas counties. As of late February, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) had reported 124 cases of measles, and the number will continue to rise as measles is a highly contagious infectious disease.

The National Medical Association (NMA) emphasizes the importance of being vaccinated against diseases like measles and strongly urges all parents to get their children the measles vaccine. The Association further implores the Texas DSHS to continue to provide resources for families in undervaccinated areas, including vaccination clinics in affected locations. It is our duty as physicians to continue educating our communities in light of this public health crisis.
