Dr. Derick Young is a board-certified family medicine physician and healthcare executive with over two decades of experience in clinical care, medical education, and physician leadership. A native of Beaumont, Texas, Dr. Young earned his undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin and completed his medical degree and family medicine residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), where he was named “Family Medicine Resident of the Year” and served as Chief Resident. He later joined the UTHSCSA faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor, where he trained medical students and residents.
Dr. Young currently serves as a Senior Medical Director and Market Medical Director for Southeast Texas with WellMed Medical Group. In this role, he leads physician teams, oversees clinical operations, and maintains a strong commitment to patient care. He has been instrumental in enterprise-wide initiatives, including WellMed’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, immunization efforts, fall prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship. His leadership has been recognized through multiple awards, including “ Best San Antonio Doctors”.
Dr. Young completed his MBA with a concentration in healthcare administration at Lamar University and was selected to the inaugural class of the Optum Health National Physician Leadership Development Program, later serving as a mentor and faculty member for physician leadership development programs.
A dedicated member of the National Medical Association, Dr. Young currently serves as Chair of Region V. He is a past president of the C.A. Whittier Medical Society and remains actively engaged in both local and national medical communities. He is also a member of the Texas Medical Association and the Jefferson County Medical Society.
In addition to his professional responsibilities, Dr. Young is deeply committed to community service. He serves as Associate Director of the Health Awareness Team for the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc., and has led health education and outreach efforts through his church, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in San Antonio and Cathedral of Faith in Beaumont, and other civic organizations. He is a Life Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
Dr. Young is passionate about advancing health equity, mentoring future physician leaders, and promoting high-quality, patient-centered, value-based care. He lives in Southeast Texas with his wife of over 30 years and enjoys hiking, camping, traveling, and spending time with their three adult children.
