Silver Spring, Maryland – The recent practice of separating migrant children from their respective parents’ care is nothing less than tragic and inhumane. Childhood is considered the most important period of development in life.

Research indicates that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including traumatic stress, violent experiences, and emotional neglect have been found to have life long, negative consequences on health outcomes. ACEs can contribute to developmental disability, mental disorders, diabetes, heart attack, obesity, and other chronic diseases that already disproportionately impact populations of color.

Therefore, any practice that promotes adverse childhood experiences should be immediately halted and reversed, with all those impacted receiving appropriate medical care.
