Dr. Gary J. Sheppard is a Board Certified Internist that has been in private practice in Houston Texas for 30 years. He graduated from Baylor University with a BA in Biology and went to University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) for medical school. It was at UTMB that he was introduced to organized medicine through SNMA and TMA; he has been participating every since. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 1994.

Dr. Sheppard has the privilege of serving a very diverse population in the Southwest part of Houston. His main interest are diabetes and hypertension, but he manages issues across the Internal Medicine spectrum. He emphasizes the importance of prevention and early intervention in disease management.

His participation in organized medicine has continued throughout his career. He has been a consistent member of the Houston Medical Forum(HMF), Harris County Medical Society(HCMS), Texas Medical Association(TMA), American Medical Association(AMA) and of course the National Medical Association(NMA). He has served as president of HMF, Houston Academy of Medicine (philanthropic arm of HCMS) and HCMS. Dr. Sheppard was NMA Region V chair and then elected to become a Trustee including serving as Chair of the Board. He has been a member of the House of Delegates since 1998.

Currently, Dr. Sheppard is serving his second year as chair of the TMA Council of Socioeconomics. He was elected to the Board of Trustees for Texas Medical Liability Trust in 2023 and MHMD physician group in 2021 and is the current Vice-Chair. He has been a member of Board of Directors for the Memorial Hermann Hospital System since 2022 and currently chairs the System Quality Committee.

Dr. Sheppard has been attending Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church since the age of 10. He serves on the First Aid Care Team, Sign Ministry, and the Trustee Board where he serves as Secretary. He also is the director of the Handbells ministry.

One of his major hobbies is traveling and is blessed to say that he visited all 7 continents by the age of 45; he continues to add new countries to his list yearly.
