Dr. Chidimma Acholonu is the current Chair and Trustee for the Post-Graduate Section of the NMA. She is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellow at Children’s National Hospital in Washington DC. She completed her pediatric residency at University of Chicago where she also served as Chief Resident before transitioning to fellowship. She earned her medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine where she was actively involved with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and continues to work closely with medical students through SNMA. Beyond her clinical fellowship, Dr. Acholonu serves as the Communication Chair for the Section on Minority Health, Equity and Inclusion for the AAP and is a current scholar for the Emergency Medical Service for Children (EMSC) program, where she is working to optimize best practices for utilizing security and law enforcement in emergency department spaces through a trauma-informed lens. Prior to matriculating to medical school, Dr. Acholonu earned her Master of Public Health degree from George Washington University, with a concentration in Community-Oriented Primary Care and afterwards continued to work in the school health sector, through health education, health promotion and capacity building, with Chicago, Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Alexandria public schools. Dr. Acholonu is passionate about building and reinforcing a diverse physician pipeline and is excited to engage trainees and early-career physicians in the work of the National Medical Association throughout her term.

Celebrating the incredible legacy of Dr. Vivian W. Pinn this #WomensHistoryMonth!
Dr. Pinn, MD, made history as the 2nd Black woman to graduate from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1967. She broke barriers as the 1st African-American woman to lead a pathology department in the U.S. and served as President of the National Medical Association.
As the first full-time director of the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health, she advanced women’s health research and inclusion in clinical trials. Dr. Pinn’s impact continues to inspire countless physicians, scientists, and researchers.
Her legacy lives on through numerous accolades, including the renaming of UVA’s medical research building to Pinn Hall in her honor.
