Ja’Nia is a third-year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She grew up in New Castle, Pennsylvania with her parents and four siblings. Ja’Nia was a student-athlete at Point Park University. She went on to receive her M.B.A. in Health Systems Management while working as an Assistant Coach for Point Park Women’s Basketball. Ja’Nia completed a post-baccalaureate program at Washington University in St. Louis and worked in research before medical school. She is an active member of the Student National Medical Association and is the 2023-2024 National President-Elect. In her spare time, she finds joy in spending time with her loved ones and being a puppy mom.

Dr. Mitchell serves on the ad hoc committee that conducted this critical study, evaluating how deaths in custody are investigated, diagnosed, recorded, and reported across the U.S. The report identifies opportunities to improve scientific standards, transparency, and accountability in medicolegal death investigations.
