The National Medical Association (NMA) urges all members, healthcare advocates, and community leaders to stand vigilant as a critical federal committee hearing convenes tomorrow, May 13, 2025, at 2:00 PM EDT, to review proposed legislation that would impose sweeping changes to the Medicaid program—changes that threaten to undermine access to care for millions of vulnerable Americans.
The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, chaired by Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), will hold a Full Committee Markup of Budget Reconciliation Text. The proposed legislation includes provisions that would:
- Impose new work requirements for Medicaid recipients;
- Enforce stricter eligibility checks and citizenship verification; and
- Establish new caps on federal Medicaid funding to states.
While these actions are being promoted as efforts to eliminate “waste, fraud, and abuse,” the NMA is deeply concerned that these proposed changes will result in devastating cuts to a program that serves as a lifeline for children, older adults, people with disabilities, low-income families, and communities of color across the country.
Medicaid is more than a safety net—it is a foundational element of our nation’s healthcare system, supporting health equity and enabling access to preventive, emergency, and long-term care for those who need it most. Limiting its reach through bureaucratic barriers or funding restrictions will only widen existing health disparities and place countless lives at risk.
We urge each of you to call on lawmakers to oppose these harmful cuts.
Now is the time for the medical community to unite in defense of the most vulnerable. We urge NMA members and allies to watch the live proceedings of the markup session and remain informed and engaged.
