Silver Spring, Maryland (December 1, 2016) – Since its inception in 1895, the National Medical Association (NMA) has advocated for and promoted the expansion of access to quality medical care for all of America. The NMA was the lead medical organization in support of the passage of Medicare in 1965. Today, Medicare, Medicaid/CHIP programs, and expansions through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) collectively cover more than 100 million people.
The NMA remains committed to protecting gains in access to quality medical care and will vigorously defend against potential threats from actions by nominated HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD. Legislation that would repeal or dismantle Medicare, Medicaid or the ACA is strongly opposed.
117th NMA President Richard Allen Williams, MD, noted that, “Medicare, Medicaid and the ACA have provided health insurance coverage for millions of Americans, thus saving countless lives. The NMA offers to work collaboratively with the incoming administration, Congress, and other medical organizations to ensure that the solid gains made over more than 50 years will not be lost.”
