Washington, DC – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has deemed electricity generation as the nation’s second biggest source of planet-warming pollution. It has proposed aggressive regulation to cut said pollution 50% by the year 2030, as promised by the Biden Administration.
The devastating effects of climate pollution produced by fossil fuel power plants and existing new gas power plants impact people of color disproportionately than their white counterparts. The National Medical Association (NMA) applauds this aggressive plan as the reduction of the unhealthy pollutants will create more positive health outcomes for communities of color, especially our youth, pregnant women and those already living with chronic diseases. The NMA strongly believes the impact of climate change is a public health crisis and, as healthcare providers, we cannot stand silently by. We agree that swift, decisive action must be taken to reduce our carbon footprint and create healthy environments for our communities and protect our planet from severe climate threats.
