Aug. 30, 2024

(WASHINGTON D.C. – Aug. 30, 2024) The National Medical Association (NMA) is proud to recognize the appointment of its president-elect, Roger Mitchell Jr., MD as the president of Howard University Hospital. Dr. Mitchell will succeed Anita Jenkins, MBA, RCP, FABC, who served the position diligently, and brings a wealth of experience and dedication to education, equity and service at Howard University.

Dr. Mitchell will step down from key administrative roles as the chief medical officer for the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan and tenure professor of pathology at the Howard University College of Medicine. He also serves as the University’s director for the Center of Excellence for Trauma and Violence Prevention, an effort designed to decrease gun violence in Washington D.C., and the chair of the Performance Improvement Committee for Howard University Hospital. Named president-elect at the 122nd convening of the NMA, Dr. Mitchell will be inducted in 2025 at the 123rd convening in Chicago. Dr. Mitchell’s expertise goes beyond teaching; he formerly served as the chief medical examiner of Washington D.C., and has been an advocate in the field of health care pertaining to disparities, inequities and violence as a public health issue.

“The National Medical Association is honored to have Dr. Mitchell as an NMA member and president-elect,” said Virginia Caine, MD, president of the NMA. “It is important that we support safety net hospitals like Howard University Hospital in the furtherance of health equity. We believe Dr. Mithcell is a perfect fit for his new role at Howard University Hospital because of his significant experience in the medical industry, as well as his passion for improving the wellbeing of those in need.”

Howard University is one of the four historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that have a medical school program. It is also a member institution of the NMA with many physicians who serve at Howard University Hospital being NMA members. During the NMA’s 122nd Annual Convention and Science Assembly, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a $600 million gift to all of the HBCU medical schools as part of its Greenwood Initiative. Dr. Mitchell’s goal is to expand and provide Howard University medical students with the resources and support they need to excel within the field of medicine.
