NMA Mourns the Loss of Reverend Jesse Jackson

For Immediate Release:

[February 17, 2026]

It is with profound sadness that the National Medical Association (NMA) acknowledges the passing of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, a monumental figure in the fight for civil rights, social justice, and healthcare. Jackson’s unwavering commitment to health equity and access made him a beacon of hope for many Americans.

“Reverend Jackson was a steadfast advocate for our community, championing the belief that healthcare is not a privilege for the few, but a fundamental right for all,” said Roger A. Mitchell Jr., MD, 126th President of the NMA. “His passion for health equity and his advocacy for those who are most vulnerable inspired all of us to fight for a better system.”

Jackson famously articulated the healthcare crisis faced by underserved populations, stating, “The poorest people need healthcare protection. They have the highest infant mortality and the lowest life expectancy. They’re dying from lack of access.” His words remind us of the imperative to ensure that every individual, regardless of their background, has the right to quality healthcare.

Founded in 1895, the NMA has dedicated itself to representing the interests of Black physicians and advocating for health equity. Jackson’s life and work resonate deeply with our mission, inspiring us to further our commitment to addressing healthcare disparities in our communities. As we remember his extraordinary contributions, we stand united in our resolve to continue the fight for accessible and equitable healthcare for all. Our prayers are with the Jackson family and all those who have been touched by his remarkable legacy.
