126th President, National Medical Association
On Monday, July 28, ten people were killed and more than a dozen were hurt in multiple shootings across the United States. Four different shootings occurred in the cities of Atlanta, Reno, Detroit, and New York. Of these, the most notable was the shooting in New York City that claimed the lives of four people including an NYPD Police Officer. The senseless gun violence that terrorizes our communities must stop! Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and communities of all of those impacted. But somehow our prayers are not enough.
The National Medical Association (NMA) has been a leading voice in defining gun violence as a persistent public health issue. In addition to being the repeated cause of mass casualty events, gun violence is a chronic condition in the U.S., serving as the leading cause of death among children ages 1 – 17. Black Americans are 11.5 times more likely to die from gun violence when compared to non-Hispanic white people.
We must address the continued rise in shootings and its impact on all communities. Doing so requires thorough strategies that include investment into research, hospital based interventions, community interruption, and policy reform. The NMA urges stricter gun laws to protect our families and our communities while tackling the underlying social determinants and systemic inequities exacerbating this issue.
