National Medical Association Concerned About U.S. Withdrawal from World Health Organization

For Immediate Release:

January 22, 2026

Statement attributable to:

Dr. Roger A. Mitchell, Jr.

126th President, National Medical Association

The National Medical Association (NMA) expresses deep concern regarding the United States withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO). At a time when global health threats, from emerging infectious diseases to climate-related health impacts, require coordinated international action, disengaging from the world’s leading global health body is not wise. This move places the health and safety of people in the United States, and especially vulnerable communities, at increased risk. The loss of collaboration, shared disease surveillance, and scientific exchange undermines preparedness and weakens the nation’s ability to respond effectively to public health emergencies.

Founded in 1895, the NMA is the nation’s oldest and largest organization representing African American physicians and their patients. Established when Black physicians were excluded from mainstream medical societies, the NMA has a long and proud history of advocating for health equity, civil rights, and access to high-quality care for historically marginalized populations. Consistent with this mission, the NMA believes that global health is inseparable from domestic health equity.

We urge policymakers to reconsider this decision and to recommit to global cooperation that strengthens public health infrastructure, advances scientific collaboration, and protects the health of all communities.
