Advancing the Field of Forensic Pathology: Lessons Learned from Death in Custody Investigations

Mitchell, Jr., MD, 126th President of the National Medical Association (NMA), as he participates in the release of a landmark National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine consensus report: “Strengthening the U.S. Medicolegal Death Investigation System: Lessons from Death in Custody.”
Dr. Mitchell serves on the ad hoc committee that conducted this critical study, evaluating how deaths in custody are investigated, diagnosed, recorded, and reported across the U.S. The report identifies opportunities to improve scientific standards, transparency, and accountability in medicolegal death investigations.
