A Special Message from NMA 126th President Roger A. Mitchell, Jr., MD
As we mark the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, we are reminded of the pivotal role these programs have played in expanding access to care and saving lives. For the National Medical Association, this milestone is not just a reflection of policy; it is a reflection of purpose.
Since our founding in 1895, the NMA has been on the front lines of the fight for equitable healthcare. We advocated for the creation of Medicare and Medicaid, understanding then, as we do now, that access to quality care is a fundamental right, not a privilege. These programs were born out of the same commitment to justice that defines our legacy.
Yet, we must acknowledge that the promise of these programs remains unfulfilled for too many. Health equity is not a side conversation, it is the conversation. In this moment, as we face widening disparities and threats to coverage for millions, our mission is more urgent than ever.
Let us honor the past by fighting for the future. Let us keep equity at the center of everything we do.
