Yesterday’s federal announcement linking acetaminophen use in pregnancy to autism is both misleading and harmful.
As the nation’s oldest and largest organization representing Black physicians, the National Medical Association (NMA) stands firmly against the spread of medical misinformation that puts parents, pregnant mothers, and unborn babies at risk.
Acetaminophen has long been safely used in pregnancy, particularly for high fevers—conditions that, if left untreated, can cause serious harm to both mother and child. The science on autism is complex, and no single cause can explain it. Announcements made without scientific rigor create unnecessary confusion for families and physicians alike.
We strongly urge families to make healthcare decisions in partnership with their trusted providers, guided by evidence and science. The NMA will continue to stand as a voice for truth, equity, and compassion—uplifting individuals and families affected by autism while advocating for research and care that bring dignity and understanding to all.

The NMA, the nation’s oldest and largest organization representing Black physicians, is calling for the immediate resignation of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
In this video, 126th President, Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., speaks directly to the urgent threat facing public health:
❌ Dismantling of our nation’s public health system
❌ Attacks on safe and effective vaccines
❌ Rejection of evidence-based medicine
These actions put every American at risk and disproportionately harm Black communities, other communities of color, rural families, and working-class Americans.
We need leadership at HHS that is:
✔ Grounded in science
✔ Guided by evidence
✔ Committed to protecting all Americans
We’re asking all physicians, nurses, dentists, scientists, public health officials, and allied health organizations to join us in defending public health and demanding leadership that puts science before politics.
